Supermodel Vanessa Hessler loses job after defending Gadhafi family

An Italian-American model has lost her biggest client after defending her former boyfriend, Mutassim Gadhafi, and his family.

Vanessa Hessler, 23, has become well-known in parts of Europe for appearing in a short red dress in advertisements for the telecommunications company Telefonica. But the telecommunications giant is axing her after a controversial interview with Italian media where she described the Gadhafi family as "normal."

Hessler had dated 36-year-old Mutassim Gadhafi, the son of Moammar Gadhafi, for four years.

"It was a passionate story, we were together for four years," said the model of her relationship with Gadhafi to the Italian weekly Diva e Donna. "The Gaddafi family is not as they are being depicted, they are normal people."

She said she was crying for Libya and that "We - France and Britain - financed the rebels. The people don't know what they are doing."

Telefonica Germany and its subsidiary Alice decided to stop working with Hessler and have removed her face from the website.

"Vanessa Hessler has failed to distance herself from her comments on the conflict in Libya," said company spokesperson Albert Fetch to The Telegraph. "We and our clients have no comprehension for what she said."

"Vanessa Hessler's relationships are private business," Telefonica Germany said in a Tweet. "However we cannot accept her comments on the Libya conflict.

Mutassim was killed alongside his father in their last stand near the Libyan city of Sirte on Oct. 21.

Hessler lived in Rome until she was eight and then moved to Washington D.C., where her father is from. Her modeling career took off when she was 15 and in 2006 was ranked 92nd on AskMen.com's list of most desirable women. She has modeled for Guess, Calvin Klein, Giorgio Armani, L'Oreal and other brands.
